New West Physicians’ Web-based Program Coaches and Monitors Progress of Participants

GOLDEN, Colo. , Jan. 15, 2005 – Beginning today, Front Range residents looking to make good on their New Year’s resolutions to lose weight, eat healthy or begin an exercise regime have a new option. Golden-based New West Physicians, a group practice of primary care physicians serving the Front Range, launched the Physicians Fitness Coach online weight loss and fitness program: Program participants receive a customized fitness and nutrition program, and their progress is monitored by New West doctors.

Waistlines in America are expanding. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999–2000, an estimated 64 percent of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese, with a body mass index of 25 or more.

“Being overweight means being at risk for largely preventable conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke, cancer, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, gallbladder disease and fatty liver disease,” said Ruth Benton, CEO of New West Physicians. “The good news is that you can lower your health risks by losing as little as 10 to 20 pounds.”

Additionally in its Status of the Nation study released in October, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that m ore than 60 percent of adults do not achieve the recommended amount of regular physical activity. In fact, 25 percent of all adults are not active at all. Although Colorado ranks low among states with obesity issues, nearly 48 percent of Denver-area residents do not get the recommended amount of weekly physical activity.

“There is no shortage of information in support of why people need to lose weight, and if the success of commercial weight loss programs is any indication, the public certainly seems to have a desire to participate in weight loss programs,” said Barbara Robino, director of the New West Physicians Fitness Coach program. “Unfortunately, what lacks is ongoing motivation or expert advice to keep a person on program. The Physicians Fitness Coach provides one-on-one interaction between the patient and his or her doctor, and is a daily motivator for people looking to control portions, increase fitness levels and learn new recipes.”

The Web site,, was created by Denver-based incenta HEALTH, a health care technology company that created a unique patent-pending weight loss program. “ incenta HEALTH’s patent-pending coaching technology focuses not only on losing excess pounds, but on working with participants individually to reshape their eating and exercise habits through interactive e-mail coaching and physician supervision,” said Jack Rule, CEO of incentaHEALTH. “The program we created through New West perfectly complements the hands-on doctor supervision provided by a primary care/whole health physician.”

Participants will have their own secure login and personal account on the Physicians Fitness Coach Web site. Upon enrollment, members are asked a series of fundamental questions such as current fitness level (foundation, intermediate or advanced) and whether they work out at home or at a gym. Members also must provide their height, weight, measurements, age and gender. A customized fitness and nutrition program is then e-mailed to the individual, including daily workout and suggested meal plans, tips and motivations for success.

Each day, members will receive an e-mail with an exercise routine, suggested meal plan, tip of the day, motivational quote for the day, and access to the Online Health Guide – a comprehensive online health guide that covers all the exercise, nutrition, and support information in detail, including a glossary of terms and links to health-related articles .

The cost of program is $49.95 per month, with a $50 one-time enrollment fee – less than the average cost of a single personal training session and comparable to popular commercial weight loss programs such as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig. The program also includes a free exercise kit and three free doctor visits per year with their New West Physicians Fitness Coach. Members need not be a patient of New West Physicians to participate in the program.

Each week, members are prompted to assess their progress in their online success journal, which is collected into a progress report complete with charts and graphs. New West Physician coaches also have access to their patients’ journals, allowing them to more easily identify the patient’s strengths and challenges, and work with the patient to achieve success. Physicians Fitness Coach also allows members to e-mail questions about exercise, nutrition, or any other fitness related topic to their Physicians Fitness Coach personal trainer.

“That one-on-one interaction is essential for program success,” said Benton. “Members now have someone to whom they are directly accountable, which is a terrific motivator.”
