A community walking program and a weight-loss program were among the winners of the Denver Healthy Communities Awards on Thursday.

Mayor Michael Hancock, along with about 100 city officials, finalists and community partners, gathered to announce the awards for health and environmental initiatives. Three winners were selected from 34 nominations.

An “innovation award” was given to Weigh and Win, which uses patented, photographed weigh-ins for Colorado adults in a free weight-loss program. It was primarily funded by Kaiser Permanente.

The “compliance award” was given to Early Excellence Program of Denver, which offers education services and job development to vulnerable families.

The “good neighbor award” went to Walk2Connect, which holds 30 walks per week led by volunteers throughout the Denver metro area.
